Reflection on Social Media Case 9: Ponderize

This case was very interesting to me, not only because I am LDS, but also that the concept of “ponderizing” became so controversial so quickly. The concept of “ponderize” was introduced by a general authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, urging members to find a scripture that they love and ponder it as well as memorize it. The general authorities son made a page in which t-shirts were sold and there was also other pieces of merchandise that were sold, promoting this spiritual concept. This ended up causing a lot of people to start speculating about where the money was going. This started the trending hashtag #moderndayprofits which turned into a frenzy of questions about the intent of the general authority and his message. He later apologized for the sites and they were all deleted, but this case made me wonder how this might have affected active members and what their thoughts might have been. I also wondered if there was any way that this situation could ...

Reflection on Social Media Case 8: Pastor's 10% to God

The case of Pastor Bell and her “tip” to Applebee’s was very interesting and honestly made me laugh quite a bit. This was an interesting/comical case because of the fact that it was made into such a big deal and all because of social media. Pastor Bell went to Applebee’s and was given an 18% gratuity expectation and refused to pay that amount, and made the comment on the receipt about how she pays her 10% to God and that she was not about to pay more to someone else than to God. This receipt was then loaded to Reddit and quickly turned into 4,000+ negative comments. Pastor Bell then complained about how her reputation was now tainted as a pastor and ordered that all who were involved in this picture being posted should be fired, and one employee did end up getting fired from this incident.             This case then made me wonder which reputation was damaged more from this incident… Pastor Bell or Applebee’s. I didn’t think tha...

Reflection on Social Media Case 7: Anthony Weiner's Post

The case of Anthony Weiner was one that struck a chord among many American’s. This man was elected to represent the best of what the people wanted and needed and instead found that he was an imperfect man. This incident was made much worse because of social media. Social media gave him a platform where he could be more secretive (or so he thought). But social media, as we all know, is accessible to the public. It started off as a rumor that was initially denied by Weiner that it was him in the photo, but social media offers a trail that cannot be erased. Anthony Weiner later confessed that it was him within the photos and discussions talking to young girls, and then withdrew himself from congress (which was a good move) because it only got worse for Anthony after the fact. Once it was basically public knowledge that Anthony Weiner had in fact had relations of some sort with those younger girls, his professional career crumbled. His wife also filed for divorce and Weiner was found s...
