Social Media Change
Social
media has changed communication immensely. Before social media, in the “stone
age” ;) There were certain limitations to how people communicated.
Relationships were determined by how much you talked to someone or saw someone,
and having relationships or conversations with people from around the world was
out of the question. However, social media came into the picture and changed
all of that.
We
now live in a world where if someone wants to stay connected they
have to have some form of social media. Because of this need being established,
social media has changed drastically how people communicate with each other.
There is no longer a need to see each other in person or even talk to another
person. As long as someone posts something on their social media you are able to be a part of
their life without really making an effort to be there. This is one form of
communication that I think, has been greatly affected by social media. There is
a lot less face to face interaction and a lot more direct messages and comments
on someone’s picture. This is of course more convenient, but it seems that we
are trading convenience for genuineness.
Because
of social media there is a larger platform to promote agendas than there ever
was. These agenda’s help people build and expand upon ideas that they are
having or their own personal views on political or social issues. We now
communicate in abbreviations as well as through our other social media. These
abbreviations make for quick and concise communication without all of the
fluff. But because of these abbreviations, people have to be well versed in
them or they will become lost in the world of “LOL’s, TTYL’S, and SOS’s” and
have no clue as to what is going on. This can cause for even more communication
difficulties and create in groups and out groups.
Social
media has also influenced the way that we write. Because of twitter, people
have been and were restricted on the amount of characters that they could use
in a post. Because of this restriction people were forced to figure out how to
get to the main point of what they want to say quicker, it even developed an unintentional language. This is actually really
important to be more clear and concise in our communication in person and in
writing, but it has become a problem for millennials to create structured
paragraphs with proper grammar. Social media has shaped the way that we speak,
how we make and form relationships, and even how we write… What’s next?
