Reflection on Social Media Case 6: Basketball Cop

The Basket Ball Cop is a story that captured the hearts of many groups of people, all because of social media. This officer received a noise complaint and went to check it out, only finding a few kids playing basketball. This officer took the opportunity to go hang out with the kids and show them a police officer that they are not normally used to. This encounter between the kids and Officer White were caught on camera, and later that week it was posted up to the departments Facebook page. Soon after the video was posted Officer White had a new name and hashtag associated with his actions, Basket Ball Cop and #HoopsNotCrime. This new image began trending and soon it was getting all sorts of attention from all sorts of people. People actually began donating basketballs and hoops to not only the neighborhood that this incident was recorded in but throughout the city, and others as well. They even had a basketball court built in one of the kids back yards so that the kids didn’t have...

Online Reputation

I was assigned to research Nathan Frandsen for this online reputation assignment. The information that was found was strictly through the posts that he and his friends made about him in several social media outlets. Nathan was born on May 22, 1995. Nathan’s Facebook informed me that he attended Mountain Crest HighSchool within Cache Valley . I would argue however that he might not have been born and raised within this valley. I make that prediction because of his love for the LA Clippers, and his constant travels to California. Because of this, I would make the guess that he was probably born, or has some kind of affiliation with the state of California which would give explanation to his love for this team and for his many vacations/visits to the state. Nathan recently gotengaged to Kayley King . Based on the pictures that I was able to find, I could guess that they had been dating for at least two years. Nathan asked Kayley to marry him at Huntington Beach, California. He w...

Reflection on Social Media Case 5: PayPal Deleted Comments

To delete, or not to delete, that is the question. For PayPal, they chose to delete to try to save face… But it did the opposite. The company was featured on Forbes and as any company would, PayPal wanted to brag about their reviews. They posted the Forbes article on their Facebook page with pure intentions but what happened was something I am sure that they never expected. People became very upset and began voicing their concerns and complaints about the company and their values. The platform of Facebook was the perfect forum for customers to voice their complaints, but also offered the company who put out the post the freedom to ask themselves to ask the question… To delete, or not to delete? To save face they began deleting comments that they did not agree with, or were not going to be helpful to business… this made people even more angry, posting more negative comments. The exact opposite of what PayPal had intended. This post to boost company moral had gone bad, and wasn’t going ...

Reflection on Social Media Case 4: Nestle's "Funner Menu Options"

The Nestle Company has been known for their electronic customer services. People reacted very well to their customer service over others because of their options to listen to an electronic response or to choose to talk to a person. This is not why Nestle had a viral experience with social media however. This company decided to include within their customer service responses a “Funner Menu Option.” Within this menu option they offered jokes as well as sounds of different actions that would no doubt put a smile on the listeners face, and it did exactly that. News started getting out about Nestle through someone creating a Reddit with the phone number to call customer service, promising that the call would be worth it if they pressed 4. Once posted the calls started flooding in and the reactions were mostly positive. At first this seemed a little overwhelming to those who worked in customer service with Nestle, but this attention was bringing them so much more attention than eve...

Reflection on Social Media Case 3: Tom Petty's 'Death' and Death

The rise in social media has given the public easier access to information, but that doesn’t always mean that that information is true. The Tom Petty ‘death’ and death case is one of those instances where there is some knowledge that just isn’t correct. This incorrectness can send the whole media into a frenzy, and that’s exactly what it did. The story started with a police report, which was not authorized to be released to the press. This means that the story actually started with a credible source that then was leaked and turned into the story that it is now.             After the police report leaking the information that Tom Petty had died, several media outlets wrote their own stories on what had happened. Before those stories could be released however, TMZ got a hold of the story and ran with it, claiming that he was in the hospital “fighting for his life.” These reports of Tom Petty’s death were being published mourning th...
