Reflection on Social Media Case 8: Pastor's 10% to God
The case of Pastor Bell and her “tip” to Applebee’s
was very interesting and honestly made me laugh quite a bit. This was an
interesting/comical case because of the fact that it was made into such a big
deal and all because of social media. Pastor Bell went to Applebee’s and was
given an 18% gratuity expectation and refused to pay that amount, and made the
comment on the receipt about how she pays her 10% to God and that she was not
about to pay more to someone else than to God. This receipt was then loaded to
Reddit and quickly turned into 4,000+ negative comments. Pastor Bell then
complained about how her reputation was now tainted as a pastor and ordered
that all who were involved in this picture being posted should be fired, and
one employee did end up getting fired from this incident.
This
case then made me wonder which reputation was damaged more from this incident…
Pastor Bell or Applebee’s. I didn’t think that it was wrong for Applebee’s to
include an 18% gratuity based on the size of the group that Pastor Bell had
with her. This is something that is expected within American culture. In fact
within our culture we are usually expected to pay a gratuity within 10-20%.
Based off of this common courtesy I don’t think that this policy that Applebee’s
had was too much to ask. Part of me believed that Pastor Bell over reacted to
the situation and should have been willing and prepared to pay that tip instead
of wanting all those involved in the situation to be fired. However, I do think
that there are things of privacy that need to be respected and posting this
receipt on the internet was violating certain levels of privacy. I think that
the person who posted the receipt should have been fired but I also believe
that this case was blown way out of proportion. So much so that Pastor Bellreleased an apology for how she handled the situation. This case taught me of
the importance of privacy but of respect for the work that people do. Guysssss
just tip your waiter/waitress and we won’t see any more of these cases… lol.
Good job girl! You made a really good point as to how the situation was blown out of proportion because of social media. I do agree with you that the waitress should have respected the pastor's privacy but at the same time I would also want to share the picture of the receipt as well so that people can understand the importance of tipping.
ReplyDeleteAmen haha. I agree with you when you say that Pastor Bell over reacted. But I also agree when you say that people need to respect the work that other people do. Simply tip people and do the right thing, so you dont end up like Pastor Bell.
ReplyDeleteI can see both sides to this situation. On one hand, Pastor Bell was out of line by only tipping 10% but I think that she has a right to privacy. I've seen pictures of receipts that people have shared but they blur out the names and signature. I feel like they could have shared the picture without exposing who signed the receipt. Great post!
