Reflection on Social Media Case 10: Miracle Mattress Twin Towers Sale
This
commercial is baffling. I actually had to re-watch it about five times to
actually believe that it was an actual legit commercial. I still can’t decide
if these individuals thought that it had been enough time since 9/11 that they
could use it in more of a comedic direction, or if they truly have no empathy
for that horrible event. Either way, I honestly was appalled… especially at the
end of the commercial to where the store manager said the words, “we will never
forget.” Which is a common phrase said on the day of 9/11 to acknowledge the
fact that 9/11 happened and that by never forgetting we also promise that we
won’t let it happen again.
I’m
not the only one that felt that this commercial was tasteless. So many news
sources started reporting on this situation and their community also retaliated
against them. One member of the community was quoted saying, I’ve never done business
with you before and I will make sue I never do business with you in the future.”
Another member of the community who actually recorded the commercial and uploaded it to youtube and Reddit said, “I thought it was offensive and
distasteful. Even if the event happened 15 years ago, lots of people died. I
don’t o what compels someone to post a video like that… and not think about
what you’re doing and the families that you’re going to affect with your ad.”
This
little mattress company did come out issuing an apology stating that they didn’t
mean to be offensive and offering a sense of comradery in the sense that they
have several military men working for them and members of their family who were
also affected by 9/11. To me, even though they offered an apology I don’t
believe that their community or the rest of the world who has seen this, will
ever be able to believe that this actually happened and that someone thought that
it was a good and clever idea. The store did end up closing for a time which
was smart… but I still just can’t believe that this happened in the first
place.
Amen. I am truly baffled at this entire case. I completely agree with you when you say you don t know not they don't think about how people will react. You would think that it would be the first thing a brand team would look at.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that I was shocked this even happened and that someone thought this would be funny or a good idea. I also agree with you that the best thing that could have happened was that they close their store.
ReplyDeleteGreat thoughts. I agree with you! This was an unfathomable case study.
