Reflection on Social Media Case 11: OK Go Gravity Song

OK Go went viral after their dance routine on treadmills and they have continued to wow people with their crazy and exciting music videos ever since. For one of their more recent music videos OK Go partnered with S7 Airlines in order to film their zero –g music video. The music video was new and exciting, and is even more exciting when you find out that they do all of their music videos with one single take. After making the video, the singing group had made it known that they were going to be sharing their new music with Facebook instead of with the normal media outlet of YouTube which they had been using previously. It was speculated that there was a lot of money being exchanged back and forth between Facebook and Alphabet (the owners of YouTube) to see which domain would be used to share this fun music video with the world.
What ended up happening was interesting though, because the day before OK Go was planning on doing their big release of the music video to Facebook Video, S7 Airlines posted the full video onto their own YouTube and were getting millions of hits. The interesting part, was that there was never anything said about S7 Airlines not being able to do that. They made no privacy agreements with each other and so technically they did nothing wrong. But, OK Go sent in a complaint and within a day their post was blocked on YouTube and OK Go was able to post on Facebook and allow their followers to listen to and enjoy their music and video. I think that this was a situation that could have definitely been avoided if they were clearer with their boundaries and what was ok and not ok to post. Of course S7 wanted to post the video, it was a possible viral video in the making and they wanted to show the world that they were a part of the genius of the video. I think that this would have been fine if they had talked about what they could and could not say before the actual group came out with it. It was a positive ending to the situation though, because OK Go ended up giving them a shout out at the beginning of the video which I’m sure calmed the waters a bit.

  1. I definitely agree clear communication is key in any agreement! This is a lesson on communicating boundaries and expectations. Great post!
